July 5, 1997 4:25PM EST Belatedly: Happy July Fourth to the USA. Winnie, Sabs and I went down to the Capitol lawn with a group of friends yesterday afternoon with a cooler full of food and armed with sunblock, hats and an umbrella for the sun. Though it was a long day sitting out in the sun, we all had fun and the fireworks were spectacular. The orchestra was down by us this year so we could actually hear the 1812 Overture, unlike last year when we needed to listen to the simulcast on the radio. There's nothing quite like sitting in the dark watching the colors light up the sky and the sparks tumbling down from the heavens like shooting stars. We went home smelling of sunblock, sunshine and the outdoors, sun-wearied but happy. Actually, we went to Friendly's for sundaes. Yum. |
