I saw a black squirrel today.

I was walking to work, just past the chain-link fence out of the Metro, clasping my elbow because the turnstile closed on me and banged up my funny bone.

And I saw it sitting there. I stopped and just looked, forgot about my elbow and stared at the little creature. It was perfectly black from nose to tail, a rich shining ebony color, silky smooth all over with just the faintest hint of brown gleaming only behind it's ears where they met at the skull.

I wished I had my camera right then, he stood up on his hind legs sniffing the wind, casting a wary eye in my direction, then stooping again into the bright green grass to sniff for food.

It was just one of those magical moments, where the wild creeps back into modern life again.

Well, I just read my e-mail, and got something from an old friend that contained all sorts of juicy news about some of my high school friends. It was really weird hearing it from this particular friend because of some things that went on between us. It was nice to hear the news about all these people though. I think about them regularly, wonder where they are and what they're doing, and kick myself for losing touch. Maybe I'll be able to catch up with some of them, now that I know where they are ...
