May 21, 1997 I watched Buffy, The Vampire Slayer last night. Sabs taped it for me while I was gone this past weekend. I crashed on the couch when I got home from work yesterday and fell asleep for several hours, and when I woke up, popped the tape in the VCR to spend an hour chilling out. But I didn't realize how creepy this last episode was going to be. It was about a girl who was so unnoticed by everyone that she became invisible. She then goes about wreaking vengeance on all those who ignored her and basically made her invisible. This was in and of itself an interesting premise, because it played on the idea of popularity and how our perceptions of people affect them. What was really scary though was the ending. It was presented in a spoofy way, looking very like an X-files episode, with two men in black taking charge of the invisible girl once Buffy managed to catch her. They take her to some random government installation where other invisible kids are being taught "Assassination and Infiltration" according to their textbooks. Though the whole set-up was incredibly implausible, it was also incredibly chilling. I thought back on my own junior-high and high school days and was glad that I had friends who cared about me. In fact, several of them have been in touch with me of late, it it's been marvelous to hear their stories and share in their lives again. There's not much that warms the heart more, than getting a thoughtful and cheering letter from an old friend. |
